Jem has been an educator in the industry for over 5 years. What makes her a qualified teacher is her 14 years of experience as an artist, 8 years of experience as a freelance artist and countless students who’s skills and careers have benefited greatly from having her as an instructor.
Jem teaches one-on-one lessons for people who want to learn how to beautify themselves and fellow artists who want to gain new skills or perfect their techniques in either makeup or hair. She also conducts small group lessons and hands-on classes for other artists, as she strongly believes in the power of learning by doing. She holds a select few sold-out classes each year in such topics as Hairstyling for Makeup Artists, Editorial Beauty Makeup, Makeup for Women of Colour, and The Business- Business Education for Hair & Makeup Artists.
Since beginning as a freelance artist, she has created 3 beauty brands, including a successful luxury bridal beauty company. So it’s not a surprise that one of her most sought-after and consistently sold out classes has been her artist’s business course, The Business. It’s been revolutionary to the industry, as no other Canadian Makeup Artist or Hairstylist teaches anything like it. She began educating other artists on building their business skills beside their beauty skills, when Blur Makeup Room invited her to be a guest speaker on their bridal business panel when her second brand & bridal company was just a year old. She was a legal assistant who reviewed contracts daily before starting as a freelancer so she has a keen ability to bridge the gap between love for the craft and love for a freelancer’s paycheck! She has commanded one of the highest day-rates in the city as a freelance/non-agency artist and in addition to working with hundreds of amazing brides over the years, she has also worked on top executives from many of the biggest companies in the city, with lots of big brands for commercial campaigns & billboard advertisements.
